Dale in Iowa
Yesterday I took my 06 GU and Grand Dog (Hayden) out for a ride in the dirt, we ride often and there are a zillion miles of gravel and trails in east central Iowa. The Cedar River is the one that flooded Cedar Rapids two years ago and it left plenty of areas adjacent to the river and downstream from Cedar Rapids for lots of nice trails developed by quads and bikes. So of course it was another play day for me.

It looked like a sand-bottom stream about 5 feet across with banks on both side. Quads had been across, so it appeared. I had to try it.....well, it was more like quicksand. Damn these narrow tires! The front end of the bike made it across and up the embankment part way on the other side, but the back....no way. Was I in 2WD? Of course. Did I put it in to reverse to see if I could back out of it? Indeed. And when I did, the entire rear end sunk like a rock and fast... When the water started reaching the spare tire and trunk, both the dog and I jumped ship. Luckily the front end stayed on the bank. I tied the bike to a tree so it wouldn't disappear altogether and went for help. Two hours later my Son-in-law showed up with my truck and we pulled the GU out of the muck. It looked like some ancient Paleolithic archeological find, like a bog bike.

I figured I'd have to truck it home but it started right up ( I love this bike!) I drove it, flinging fresh mud everywhere for miles. We headed home (about 5 miles) first stopping at a favorite rural watering hole where biker's were showing off their meticulously clean Harleys. My bike, my Grand Dog and myself were fully covered with muck. Heads turned fingers pointed, disgust? No, we were a curiosity. I stopped, went in, and bought a hamburger for both myself and Hayden. We sat on the porch and ate, while I watched a dozen bikers surround the GU inspecting it (this happens all the time). "....it's Russian military bike." I exclaimed. “Yes, it has reverse and two wheel drive, neither of which did us a bit of good this morning.” They chuckled….”yeah, we can tell how deep it was buried”. Yeah, it was fun.

Today, I'll check the rear-end to see if it's full of grey foam (water and oil).

Change the fluids, clean and grease all U-joints and wheel bearing...or you'll be busy replacing them in the not too distant future.

Fond memories!!

I had a similar adventure myself. No truck for me, only a hand winch, 3 hours of sweat and near foot-rot!!

Check your carbs too. I found silt around my carb diaphragms.
