Just a little note to those that might be interested, My Diesel powered Dnepr 16 is back on the road, building a second one.

Hope to see you all in Death Valley in Feb. thumbsup!.gif

Dave

I have not been around here long enough to know all of the particulars, so what engine? where is gas tank? what trans are you using? thumbsup!.gif

Ooh! Is that a 1000 cc Daihatsu diesel engine? But where´s the gas tank? What's the milage on one of those?
Rich Maund
Man.... That is just so cool. I would love to see that in person someday. Seriously!

If I ever get to retire, that would be a perfect project for me.

The diesel motor is impressive but I'd like to know about what parts you used for the front disc brake conversion ?

Diesel Dave,

This is a GREAT project I remember reading about this a while back. You really need to offer up a quick mods list. Then you and I need to talk about dropping my frame off at your shop hahaah. I think a VW or small diesel swap is the perfect thing for these bikes.

Please keep us in the loop!

Cheers

I don't get to an internet connection very often so I'll try an answer your questions'

The engine is a German Hatz Diesel, 2 cylinders, 1000cc, Model 2G40 See: Diesel on this web page http://www.loew-gmbh.de/index_motorrad.htm or look over this web site http://www.dieselbike.net/

The fuel tank/filter is temporary, located on the side of the sidecar 2 gallons, I average 100+ mpg so it's plenty for now.

Both my Dnepr’s have the same Disc Brake Setup. The disc brake is a late factory piece I believe, (raise eyebrows now) Mitch at Vostok Motors has several new Dnepr’s with the same exact disc brake setup.

Thanks for all the positive replies.

Dave

See you all in Death Valley thumbsup!.gif

What's your top cruising speed?

Is this Bike out of Alaska?
In this months issue of The Horse mag. in the readers rides section a guy from Alaska had a pic of his with the same type Engine, but the color was different.
I think my 94' tourist came from the same guy up there FYI.

Great Bike, in the write up he claims 125mi per gallon, that darn near justifies the price of the conversion.

I followed Diesel Dave's links and found a pic of the diesel ural, enjoy.Click to view attachment

Any idea of horsepower and torque figures? It looks, um, kinda good, in an agricultural/oldschool kinda way. A turboed 1000cc diesel would probly pull a train? Nice work, thanks for sharing.
Diesel Dave
Hello all again,

Ok, the top speed of my bike now is 43 mph with stock gearing of an MT16 (4th gear @ 1.31:1) Now please note the Hatz engines are internaly governed to a max rpm of 2900 rpm. sad.gif Future plans call for third and forth gear ratio increase (4th gear @ 1:1 ratio) which will give me a Top speed of 56 mph. my other engines will run 4300+ rpm which will achieve a top speed of between 60-70+ mph after gear ratio changes. And if you play with a solo final drive which have ratios from the stock 3.89, or optional 3.5, or 3.2 ratios will get you into the 80+ mph range.

Yes turbochargers are fun to stuff on these engines. I turbocharged my 954cc Ruggerini in my 1981 Honda. See: http://tinyurl.com/y8g2m3t
This engine now hooked up to a Dnepr Transmission (next Diesel Dnepr). Please note I'll have to re-route turbo plumbing from the picture.

I'm also in the process of adapting a 950cc Briggs/Daihatsu turbocharged 3LC engine which is my first choice in a Diesel engine for a motorcycle and will focus on these engines from here on out. http://www.vanguardengines.com/vanguard-en...0Turbo%20Diesel This is the same engine used in another Ural conversion out of Florida and OCC chopper guys just did a chopper build using this same engine. I put the that little diesel in my Harley back in 2005, sold the Harley, still have the engine. See: http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/lsr21/supercharged.html You will have to scroll down to Dave parts 2-4.

As for the Hatz Ural, that was Pete Marsh from Alaska, he sold it awhile back and is now living down by Santa Barbara CA. Ski from Tri-Quest Motors (Ural Santa Clara, CA) has been in touch with him, I have more pictures of Pete's old bike when he was building it.

Thanks for the questions.

I don't know what it is but I love those diesel bikes.
I own a duramax diesel so maybe its from seeing just how much performance you can get from a diesel for pretty cheap.

Maybe thinking that rigs like ours are made for rough and tumble the diesel seems more of a fit.

Wow Dave, the links are great. Awesome. Do you have a mate that makes moonshine and another with a fish and chip shop? mmmm the sweet smell of biodiesel. Have you finished grafting the arse end on the rusky yet? Love to see more photo's of that.

COOOL ...I neeed to hear theese things .... i cannot imgine how they sound !! lets see some video :-)

That is great!

I do agree that the diesel engine seems a harmonious match to a Ural/Dnepr given it's rough diamond character!

And the MPG!! Fantastic: that would remove my biggest gripe with the Ural. That and getting a top speed of about 60mph would make for a great hack!!

Shame diesel is not very common in some of my intended detinations, or I might be tempted!!

So how much heavier is a bike with a diesel lump in it? That engine certainly looks heavy!
