Just did a few seconds worth of research and evidently Virginia is a CARB compliant State for portable gas cans etc. Just wondering what alternatives there are out there in the 10L size for a Ural? I have been searching and come across many of the 20L size but none of the 10L size. Any help appreciated.

cheers,

if your looking to put one on your bike with a 10L holder from over seas you will not find one in the states , only 20 and 5L and they don't fit you have to get them from a Ural dealer or from Germany or Russia

Last year the Federal Government passed a Federal law banning non CARB compliant fuel containers everywhere in the U.S. That said I buy mine from these guys http://offroadtrailtools.com/ and they still had some left a month ago when I bought a spare. These are the holders I use and I just picked up 2 new ones when I got to work Saturday, http://www.britishpacific.com/BPSite/landr...ans.html#holder .

I'm sure glad I only carry two " fluid " containers on my old rig. I guess two non-compliant gas cans would be a terrible thing for the planet in general .....

I suppose I could have linked straight to the cans, it looks like they still have some left too. http://www.offroadtrailtools.com/shop/inde...etail&p=390
Looks like it depends what county in Virginia you are in whether they can ship it to you or not also: "Not shippable to the following states or areas. CA, DE, MD, NY, PA, MA, CT, NJ, TX, NH, OH & D.C... Also the following counties in VA. Arlington, Fairfax, Loudon, Prince Williams, Stafford" Might need to get a friend to get it for you if you are in one of those counties.

I live in New Kent County in Virginia.

Where would it be an issue if one was to buy a non CARB compliant fuel can in a State that has the CARB law? Could I be stopped at a tunnel for inspection kind of thing? Anyone have experience with this?

I guess I could email my two local kinda sell Ural dealerships to find out as well.

I'm with JVHA- could I be stopped and ticketed? Or worse, have my two cans confiscated? Mine are the black Ural 10L ones, so they're not even the right color. Gas stations tell me I can't fill 'em; but I tell them it is a historical military re-enactment rig and that it's ok in my case. Always works with the gas stations, but I don't know about an eager Barney Fife...

...and it's not like they are hidden or anything.

If you got them flaunt them.
The only problem is with selling them, if you own them it isn't an issue. The gas can police aren't going to pull you over and give you ticket. The reason you can still buy non CARB compliant cans is because they can still sell their old stock but once those are gone they can't sell new ones.

I am in one of the states that you can't get a carb compliant gas can shipped to ! What is that about!!! dry.gif

I looked on amazon.com and a stainless steel 2.5 gallon (10 liter) jerry can is listed for sale with no state restrictions. It is a Pilot BC-691 Stainless Steel Jerry Can - 2.5 Gallon. Its $89 but it is polished stainless steel. Looks pretty good to me. You can buy or make a holder for it. I have a painted plain steel one that I bought a couple of years ago and made my own mounting bracket. It has worked well but if the stainless one was available when I bought mine, I would have ordered it instead just cause I like shiny things rolleyes.gif .

Just bought a couple of 5 Liter ones (non-carb) from a guy from NC on ebay. $17 each plus shipping. Will clean them up and make a holder/bracket etc.

Some states, counties won't allow you to get certain things shipped to them. knives, pellet guns, gas cans, ammo and explosives to name a few. It is a state, county issue. Private transactions can get around the issue but if the items are found in transit you stand the risk of confiscation in certain instances.

I pulled into the tank inspection line at the Hampton Roads tunnel last year since I had a propane tank in the bed of the truck. The guy looked at it and said thanks and waived me on. He siad they really only care about 100 lb or bigger propane tanks and as long as gas was in a sealed plastic or metal container they did not care about that either.
2 years ago I pulled over for a disabled car and he had run out of gas. I used the ural "liquid container" full of gas to get him up and running to a sation and the trooper that pulled up remarked that was a cool thing to have on the bike and did not give it a second thought. He is also the DOT/ commercial vehicle inspector for my county so he either gave me a great pass on it or just doesn't care..

Just a little soapboxin' here.
With all the things going on in America today, why is our fine federal government wasting time and money on all these trivial matters of compliance on a gas can?
When as citizens are we going to demand that our leaders lead and not bind us up in such bullsh!t as this.

As far as addressing any thoughts on any DOT officer, i rank them among the people that are saving us from the dreaded non-carb compliant can.

Gas will melt plastic milk jugs. A long time ago a guy I knew wanted to use gas from his company deliver vehical. He shows up in my parents drive way borrows some empty milk jugs and siphons gas into them. The jugs failed before he got out of the driveway and we huredly pored them back into the company vehical before they made a bigger mess.

Saw this somewhere ..........

The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws." - Ayn Rand "

Hi Martyn,

I think the shipping costs to US would be quite high for the can unfortunately.

thanks,

Here's an interesting solution to carrying some extra fuel. I ordered a 1 gallon size on ebay with a bracket and may use it on my BMW.
