Your kidding right?
These are not Harley Davidsons you can ride them in bad weather and they are fun.

Yeah, sidecar rigs are a kick in the butt to ride in the snow! thumbsup!.gif

Winter ridings not for everyone and some don't like what road salt does to their beloved rigs...........

For me it was the primary reason for buying the sidecar outfit, so I could ride on any day I choose in the Winter not just after a warm dry spell cleared the raods. It's been great and no more "Winter no riding blues".

What works for you is best but give it shot, ya might just love it! thumbsup!.gif

thanks for the thought on the mags, would be happy to do a swap ! But man...I got into these things after seeing a guy ride one across Siberia in the middle of winter.
You're in OHIO for christsakes, you don't even get serious snow!

I don't really start riding the Ural until I get a foot of snow on the driveway.

to all that have put in there thoughts. were i live we only have a one car garage and no car port so in the winter i take my bike to my property where i have a barn and store it there so the girl friend can have her garage i really don't want by bike sitting out in all the weather if it dose not have to . i would truly love to ride it in the snow . as for Ohio weather we are in one of three places in the world that gets lake affect snow and we are also in the secondary snow belt so we could get a one to punch like they say here you can go from sun, snow, rain, ice, sleet, moon shine all in one hour . and people around here don't know how to drive in the winter they all get dumb and think they can still go 60ph in snow and ice!

What I do is ride before they salt, For me thats one of the main reasons i wanted the machine was to ride all year. cold. snow, rain , Some people dont like winter rides as for myself i love a nice cold weather ride to the local coffe shop,

Storage can be a definate issue in the Winter. I would hate to have to clean the snow off every morning and we don't get anything like the lake effect storms.

Those pictures and that scenery are spectacular. Now thats some serious winter great pics

What are 'lake effect storms'? They must be pretty bad if they stop you riding in winter. I must admit to spilling my tea when I saw you were going to lay the bike up for the winter.

Try this:

And this:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/features/unde...fect_snow.shtml

It mainly occurs in the Great Lakes region of the U.S. but Scandinavia is notorius for it also.

Up Here in New England , Well i Am in Beverly And the ocean causes the same effect, we Call them Squalls, They Dont dump as much snow as Lake effect, But Sometimes it goes From calm to Wind and snow very quickly

lake effect can be any thing from a lite snow to a down right white out and snow up to your as*^^^%%$%#@ in just a minute. you can get inches in just a matter of short time nothing moves. most of the time its not to bad here in Ohio where i am at we are right on the cuff of the secondary snow belt. we use a lot of salt and i don't want it on my rig let alone on my truck but you have to get places . the weather here can be down right cold with no humidity in the air to cold and damp and nether one is fun unless your from Siberia or an Eskimo
Serious Black
Interesting, we don't get this here anyway. Just the Gulf Stream hitting us square on. Makes for a mild climate by Scandinavian standards. Still doesn't stop them salting the roads to hell though.
Iron Mike
Lake effect snow is more about quantity than severity. The extra moisture picked up off the Great Lakes causes a mini climate in which more snow storms happen from this added moisture than in land locked locations. A place like Buffalo New York is a classic example . Sitting on the eastern shore of Lake Erie in a normal winter they get storm after storm caused by the lake effect.
By spring the road crews have run out of places to put the stuff. I grew up in that part of the world and it's one thing I don't miss.

PA has apparently considered using less salt and instead using beet juice. Yes. Beet juice. It apparently has a high sodium content and is cheaper. I dont know if the effects would be less than rocksalt but its something to look into. Start a lobby?
Duckyde
Originally I grew up in the Buffalo, NY area where we fully understand the meaning of "lake effect" snow. Sometimes it can be 10 inches in two hours, other times 3 feet in the ten hours and one rare year at my parents house they got 6-7 feet in 24 hours. It's doesn't come all the time like that but when it does come, it comes fast. Not to mention everyone forgets how to drive at once.

Back during the winter of '07-'08, we had to trailer my BMW rig from Ohio to the builder in central PA. In the process, it got a good dose of that beet juice and, unfortunately, the shop didn't wash the rig after it arrived. And I thought Ohio salt was bad. Holy Sheite!! If you are riding/trailering in PA, wash that stuff off yesterday!

IceQueen
I love the winter riding, but the salt is a killer. I washed the rig more times in one winter than two summers combined.
