Royal Enfield = Good buy

We went to the factory/importer open day at Watsonian/Squire the other week.

Loads of bikes out. Workshops open. Test rides. Loads of owners. Lots of things to look at and ask questions about.

Seen and ridden a few of the earlier indian ones and these later 65's and electra's seem an order of magnitude better. I'd say loads better than a new Ural. We were smitten on the test rides and will be looking to move on her BMW for a newer Enfield.

I also met Dave Angel (of F2 motorcycles in the Uk) on a new ural outfit.

I have a '96 Enfield 500 that I bought in 1997 and have ridden for over 25,000 miles.  It's a sweet ride and the most fun one can have on two wheels.  I decided on the Bullet (a misnomer) over a Ural then because of the superior fit and finish.....imagine that!  Kevin Mahoney (the importer at Classic Motorworks) has worked diligently to improve the marque.  I personally think that he has patterned the company after Harley Davidson, realizing that riders want to personalize their rides.  OEM and aftermarket parts and accessories are more than abundant.  If you can't find it in the Royal Enfield catalog, you don't need it!  It would be wonderful if some deep pocket investors could resurrect the Dnepr.......my MT-11 is absolutely the most fun I have ever had on a bike.  Got to run now.......my wife says that Bill Gates has returned my telephone call!

I'm going to ride over Raceway in Salem on Friday as Jim sells both Urals and Enfields (the bike, not the rifle) and I've never seen an RE in the flesh.

With gas knocking over $3.15/gal, I thought a 500cc that gets in the 70-80 mpg range would be just the ticket.  I see the new Electra goes for about $5,600 out the door, which is $400 more than a KLR 650, another thumper that I have a weakness for.

The Ural gets about 25 mpg in town, which beats my Jeep but not my GS, which is about 44 mpg for city riding.
Once you go hack, you'll never go back.

Say Hi to Jim and the crew for me...

You will like the Enfield - seat height about 34 inches, payload about 380 pounds, tank capacity 3.8 gallons, and will last for a long time, ground clearance is ok -  about 5.5 inches, and the beast is such a forgiving machine..  It will perform great on any surface, doesn't mind hitting loose road surfaces, doesn't wobble, leans readily, and just sounds good.  I have ridden thousands of miles on an Enfield, and enjoyed every moment of it -  I can do the figure 8 required for the test on the Enfield MUCH tighter than I can with the Honda 250 I passed the test on.  It just doesn't like falling over.  Jim invented the now internationally sold side stand for the bike - it is the easiest to find with a booted foot, and the neutral finder is amazing - you don't hunt for neutral, you just hit the finder, and you are there.  My first had a right hand gear shift, this one is left - I may change it back to the original - it is aftermarket fitted, for the US, but the new 5 speed bikes are all left hand shift by design.  You can probably tell I love my Bullet - so called because the Enfield that designed it, also made rifles.  (as did BSA the name stands for British Small Arms.. )

Ok, I will shut up now... Oh yes, a Ural comment.. My Tourist likes the Enfield.. (it doesn't much like the Harley)

No, that is a Kawasaki W650. The sidecar is the a Cozy which you usually see on the Enfield, but the Enfield, bless it's little thumper heart, Can't pull  the sidecar very well, not enough horses.
The W650 with the fully loaded Cozy took me 400 interstate miles (and 400 back)
to the USCA rally in Ark a couple of weeks ago.

evcman,
That is one sweet-looking outfit.  I just assumed it was an RE; that retro Kawi looks great with the "dirgible" sidecar.

BTW, Joe DeWeese showed me some pics of a RE Military with that same Cozy sidecar on it.  Beautiful looking outfit, but probably could barely get out of its own way given RE's churn out ~22 hp.

Unlike our high-performance Urals and their thundering 38-42 hp.  Stand back, I am about to engage the starter; keep clear of the exhaust pipes.

mylash: PM me your actual name and I'll pass your salutations on to Jim and Co.

1999 Bullet Military...

VMAX (Actual, not indicated) 73 mph "downhill with tail wind". Cruise all day at 55-60.

Add Cosy sidecar...

VMAX dropped to 48 mph. That's right, a 25 mph drop due to adding the sidecar!  Cruise dropped into the 30's. Sidecar removed and sold soon thereafter.

Royal Enfields just aren't sidecar tugs. Period. But we all need one solo bike in our stable and a Bullet is a perfect one!

Sarge

I'd agree/

I'm going over to Raceway on Friday, although I think all Jim has in at the moment are the Electras.  They have disc brake up front, improved cylinder, better suspension up front and gas shock in rear.

Still, I love the looks of those Militarys.  It's a 45-60 wait to get one, though.

With any luck I squeeze in a test ride of an RE.
