Help with Dnepr box into my M72

Hi folks. Looking for advice regarding this Dnepr gearbox i want to install into my 1957 M72. I understand we need to shorten the driveshaft by 20mm. But before we do this i have some questions regarding the reverse.

Trying to manually engage the reverse whilst on the floor is not working. The lever will not move. Is there special way to do this? A youtube link maybe. I am worried if i cut the shaft only to find this box is a dud. Anyway of testing it? To engage reverse i take it the box must be in neutral then pull the lever back.. is that right? Sorry...if my questions are dumb..but i am drowning here.

Mark

Hi, Mark

I am not sure exactly which gearbox you are using, but on the later

ones, you push the lever FORWARDS for reverse and towards the rear

of the bike for the forward gears.

Good luck

Jim

Jim, i can't get that hand shift to move at all. Here is a couple more pics

Make certain the box is in neutral.

Then try moving the reverse lever forward.

It may help to rotate the output shaft at the same time.

Thanks. Tried that and the hand lever doesn't move in any direction. Maybe we will install it, get the engine running and see if we can shift gears without the drive shaft. I have one other gear box (old soviet) which i will install if reverse doesnt work on the Dnepr. Here is a pic of it.post-49652-0-94738800-1504733322_thumb.jpg

Be sure you put the gearbox in neutral when you want to shift in reverse. If it is not in neutral it will not work.

thanks. Even when in neutral that hand lever will not move. I m starting the think i will just put that soviet times one in. I dont have to shorten the drive shaft. I am not sure how to do that. Mark

The drive shaft can be cut, make a sleeve at a turner and weld the drive shaft.
