MotoJ
Not sure if this is appropriate here, but it is a "bike of interest" to me, at least. I'm not affiliated with these bikes, sale of these bikes, yadda yadda yadda.... ZongShen RX-3, to be imported through a company in California, the California Scooter Company, by the new year, after it passes EPA stuff. It will be legal in all 50 states. They are already being sold in England (as the Hundley), Australia, Russia (as the Minsk), some other European countries, and all over Asia. The motor is a Zong NC250- a water-cooled 250 of their own design, not a Honda clone. They are currently powering all sorts of other bikes already..Transmission is 6 speeds. Comes with luggage. Kinda porky at 359 pounds wet, but any 250 starts getting heavy as you put windshields and racks and bags all over it.I've done a lot of reading and the motor gets rave reviews as being peppy and also bulletproof, but seems incidentals like wheel bearings and chains and sprockets and stuff are kinda crappy. Zongshen is a huge manufacturer of bikes, generators, pump motors, etc. in China. Zuo Zongshen has been compared to Ichiro Honda. He is focusing on price and quality and expanding to the West. The Chinese have come to drink our milkshakes! Introductory price is $2895, with 1 year warranty. No dealers yet, so the CA seller, CSC, will reimburse local shops for work and FedEx any parts. I'm kind of intrigued. I have a KLR250 that I use a lot, for commuting, messing around in the woods, etc. It's fun and reliable. I'm not afraid of little bikes- they can be a blast. For the price I might take a chance. I used to hate buying non USA goods and especially stuff from China, but it's almost impossible to avoid nowadays, plus I haven't had a raise in almost a decade. This guy has a 200GY-2 Zong that he bought new and has put over 61,000 miles (not Km) on it now.he has done some mods to it, incl a Yamaha swingarm and wheel, bigger Clarke tank, etc., but hasn't touched the motor. lobofuego
Oh no ,sorry...after their efforts to make a generator that functions for any period of time, and of the multitudinous amounts of plastic disposable scooters....I will not be buying one, anytime soon, if ever...it is kinda like the antithesis, to my Ural thing , that has stood the test of time... MotoJ
There are still plenty of folks who scoff at Urals. I don't think even us foil heads would not still like to see more consistent QC. People scoffed at Japanese products fifty years ago. Now they are the standard of quality in more product lines than I can list here. I think Zong Shen is going to be the break-out manufacturer of high quality Chinese motorcycles. They already make motors for BMW, Piaggio, and others. This particular bike is already being sold as the Russian Minsk, the British Honley, and as the Zong Shen RX3 in South America, South Africa, all over Asia, and in Europe and Australia. At the price, I might be a guinea pig. It can't be more headache than my M72!
lobofuego
Whilst the comparison to the Japanese takeover ...and decline, may be similar, I do not feel that the quality of anything is improving except for the quality of the mindwash we are all subject too...The early days of Henry Ford, bear testimony to the rise and rise of the built in obsolescence school of engineering, now incorporate in all that we buy, that we will buy again, and again...This is very much now incorporated into the entire Chinese production philosophy...I am sure this philosophy will pervade all of our world, as most major corperations that run our Governments are all hand in glove, making big money at the expence of our planet, that will leave us all dead , and buried in an earth ,of redundant plastic dirt,

lobofuego
!! okay then....things of quality are a joy forever, in that a thing of quality can be rebuilt back to its original spec...thus the costs of production, are weighed against the amount produced, however the current and unsustainable model as is...means make cheap ###### that just about fufils its function, whilst the warranty lasts...then throw it away and buy another!!...I love a classic design, and having withstood the tests of time our Ural/Dnepr thing is not a thing, to be cast aside on the basis that I could buy some plastic disposable motorbike, that is"better"....It is more of a spiritual thing!!Metal is a crystal!!! this was only discovered with the evolution of the jet engine, and as the nature of crystal energy is bearly understood by the prolatariate!!suffice to say....it becomes a part of you, and becomes harmonious with your Vibe!!....!!!sometimes not!!! MotoJ
Unless you found a model where every part was hand sculpted and has a lifetime warranty, your own Ural/Dnepr thing was made to the same minimal tolerances, to a cost, that any other product made in a factory was. Don't assign any more worth to one hunk of mass produced item than another, just because it has more metal in it.Power to weight ratio, EFI, recycled materials, etc. also make a newer "plastic" machine better for our beloved environment. Methinks you have conflicting philosophies.
guzzidude
When I was over there a few years ago I thought that the Lifans were going to be sold over here like hotcakes and be reliable. Well. the old Honda technology is reliable, but the manufacturing quality seemed not so much. They are cheap for a reason. I am not trying to get in on any argument or opinion, but from when I was over there (just my experience) and see what is being sold over here, I cannot say I would be excited to hop on one of these and go 70 mph due to build quality and the experience in things that go fast. The largest sport bike I saw a layman have was a 150cc... I don't want to get started, so I will stop now. lol. Buy a used KLR or VStrom and ride it for 20 yrs. lobofuego
A new EFI type machine is better for the envoiroment...you think...then why do all of these new EFI type machines do roughly the same mpg as older machines whilst claiming to be more efficient???...and pray tell ,that whilst all of these machines have to be biodegradable by law now....is it not ,that the biodegradability of said machines would be incorporated from the moment of manufacture, meaning that it will naturally biodegrade within a lifetime, decided by those who make the components...Hence the various new cars being scrapped, after a few years due to the failure of various ECU,s to expensive to replace??...By things of quality, I mean , well to define quality ,is difficult, Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance takes a stab at it...and that's a whole book...so I will not, we mostly know what we mean when we use the term....But Giant motoring cartels that are refinanced periodically (GM)!....do not have our interests at heart, and the idea that newer is better is an illusion..the concept of a world in which we are all happy ,buying more rubbish, whilst the quality of life deteriorates all around us, is a fantasy designed by PR men, ultimately , we will be the ones picking up the tab for this manufacturing excess, which logically cannot continue in any kind of future, unless it is disciplined, by minds a little bit sharper than those who currently hold the reigns of knowledge and power...as the state of the world currently bears testimony too...methinks my philosophy is just fine!!
