  1. Hi John, never heard back from you via private message..... What it all came down to was finding someone at the RMS who was an historic vehicle enthusiat and was willing to put the time and effort in to find out exactly what the rules are surrounding this vehicle's left hand drive configuration and the laws surrounding the NSW Historic Vehicle Scheme. It took 4 separate trips to four different RMS offices to find someone who knew more than the basics and was willing to really put in alot of beyond the normal effort to help me get on the road. Essentially, what it all boiled down to was 'is the vehicle's make and model in the existing RMS database of vehicles'. If so then its was as simple as a few mouse clicks and I was on my way. My model was in there, as was MT 16, but they would not allow me to go against my import papers which stated it is an MB 650 - rightly or wrongly. Also I am keen to get in touch with any of you here in Oz with these bikes as you say you know a few people, for ride, exchange info, whatever. And the bloke I bought my bike from is now on the hunt to get a hold of another Dnepr with sidecar now that his lifestyle is more conducive. So if you know of a sale let me know and I can pass the info on. Thanks John. Sent from my ZTE T84 using Tapatalk
  2. It's sort of easy once you know how! I'll send you a PM, it'll be easier to explain over the phone
  3. My import papers say it is an MB 650. Whether it is or not. With no other documentation to prove otherwise the RMS go off the import papers is what they told me. Sent from my ZTE T84 using Tapatalk
  4. Can't say for sure, but the 60days personal use is a new law, it was previously 5 days personal use! It's a 2 year trial so everyone is playing by the rules so it hopefully becomes a permanent feature. Sent from my ZTE T84 using Tapatalk
  5. So, after collecting all the parts I needed to convert the sidecar from right hand side to left hand side, I stumbled upon a man with a WW2 era BMW in the same left hand drive/2WD configuration as my bike........ With legal permission to use NSW roads under the Historic Vehicle Scheme. Soon after I stumbled upon 2 more people with the same BMW/Zundapp set up on the same scheme. So I joined a vehicle club, had a safety inspection completed on the bike and I'm done. On the road, legal, legit, insured! I get 60 days a year for personal use (more than 1 day per week!) plus any day my club has any sort of activity is legal and doesn't come off my 60 day tally! And I get to keep the 2wd functionality!
  6. Hi Max, have this Dnepr which has not yet been converted for Australian roads, so the side car is on the correct side for authenticity's sake. Bike runs well and can be ridden about. Bike is located in Newcastle NSW.
  7. Thanks mate! I had kind of already resigned myself to converting it...............I've been dealing with some skin cancer issues since I last posted here but it all looks like it's sorted out now so I can actually make a start on sorting the bike out. Thanks for everyone's input!
  8. Yeah NSW is great state to try and do fun stuff in! Whatever I do it has to be legal in every sense of the word, I am not looking to cut corners or flaunt loop holes. It's either done totally legal or it'll have to find a new home with someone in a state where it can be used. It just would have been nice if the original engineer who said there were no pitfalls to catch me out as long as the set up was dead standard had mentioned the side car side was an issue. I know that may be obvious to most of you, but my neighbour used yo be an RTA/RMS employee who did compliance for Individually Constructed Vehicles and even he was un-aware that there was a requirement for the side car to be on the left!
  9. Thanks mate, an engineer here mentioned something along those lines too. Looks like I'll be taking to it with the grinder and plasma cutter at some point soon then!
  10. Cool, thanks for all the info! Can't really comment on all the differing opions on which model it is, maybe it is a bitsa - that doesn't really bother me. I'm away at work for a couple of weeks now so it'll be a while before I can look at any of the above mentioned identifiers of what model it really is. I bought it in NSW, I am told the original owner (a military vehicle historian from Queensland) went over to Europe on some sort of tour with about 20 people, bought a heap of them, rode back to Italy with a few mechanics and a heap of spare parts in tow and shipped the bikes/parts home to Australia. When that actually took place I do not know The bike came with Import papers, I will see what date is on there. Then at some point later on, the original australian owner swapped the Dnepr for a Humber Super Snipe (owned by the guy I bought the Dnepr from) as the military historian wanted to restore the Super Snipe as WW2 staff car. Thanks again
  11. Hi All, I am brand new here, and brand new to owning a Dnepr. It was a chance purchase after my wife spotted it on Gumtree just before Xmas and suddenly decided she loved military motorcycles with sidecars! My only previous experience with bikes is road bikes and enduro bikes, which i stopped tinkering with a couple of years ago and sold. So, we now have the thing and have to find a way to register it.....I did try to do my homework on this, a prominent motorcycle/sidecar engineer claimed that as long as the bike was standard I would have no trouble and he would only need the bike for a few hours to get it sorted out paper work wise and have us registered for NSW. So we bought it. Then when we rang back to ask a few other questions about what was required before brining it to him he made mention of the side car needing to be on the LEFT of the bike, a slight problem for us as the sidecar is on the RIGHT. So, anybody got any suggestions? NSW conditional rego through a motorcycle club of some kind? I'm a pretty handy welder/Fabricator, trade qualified for 15 years, most of that in the offshore oil and gas sector. A complete swap of sidecar from Right to Left has been suggested by 2 engineers, either through them doing it, or coaching me through what needs to be done. But if I could get it on the road in some fashion, even for limited days per year, without the 5 minute task of completely swapping a side car from Right to Left, that would be pretty good! Thanks in advance for any help that comes my way!
